Pick A Good Team To Go With
Many escape rooms let you pick a team to go with or show up and try to work with random people. You'll find that the latter doesn't work that well because you have no idea who is going to be on your team. You'll always want to go into an escape room with a team that is good at solving puzzles. The key is to have people on your team that have different skills that can be useful. For example, having someone join your group that is good with math problems is very helpful, but a team full of people that are good at math problems is not going to be helpful.
Let Someone Be The Leader
Don't assume that people are going to fall in line with orders once the escape room starts. Try to pick someone to be the leader and have them assign tasks, collect solved clues, and things of that nature. If you don't go into the room with a leader, everyone will try to be the leader and there will be a lot of miscommunication. This can result in people not sharing all the information they know because they are waiting for others to report to them.
Know The Rules Of The Room
Make sure that you understand the rules and stick to them. For example, the company that runs the escape room may be very clear that certain items can't be taken off the walls. Listening and following directions is going to save you time. However, if there is not a rule preventing you from doing something, then feel free to do it. If they said things can't be taken off walls, can you look under rugs on the floor? There may be a reason that only certain rules were given. Just make sure that you do things in an orderly and safe fashion to ensure that you do not damage anything.
Check Everything Twice
Think that you're stumped on a puzzle? It helps to have two people search a room twice for clues. Just because someone said they checked the drawer doesn't mean that they didn't find a clue. They may have missed something, and a second set of eyes can help find a clue that was missed.
